Bibliography on Domestic Violence and Child Abuse
There is little public interest in the plight of
children who experience family violence, the

model has not traditionally supported the needs of
these children.
Break The Silence, Make The Call
Millions of American women are physically and
emotionally abused by their husbands or partners
each year. Recent statewide polling indicates that
for most Texans, someone you know, your mother,
sister, friend, co-worker or neighbor is a victim of
domestic violence. Your support and encouragement can be of tremendous value to a
friend involved in an abusive relationship. You can
ease the isolation and loss of control your friend
may feel by listening, providing information on
domestic violence, and helping to explore options.

Domestic Violence
Reported rates of Domestic Violence are quite
high. Victims suffer not only from physical abuse,
but also from low self-esteem, emotional and
post-traumatic stress, substance abuse, and
homelessness. In addition, they are often discouraged or prevented from attending work or
a job training program.

Domestic Violence an Overview
Domestic Violence
isn't just hitting, or fighting, or an occasional mean
argument. It's a chronic abuse of power. The
abuser tortures and controls the victim by
calculated threats, intimidation, and physical violence.
Actual physical violence is often the end result
of months or years of intimidation and
control.

Ending Domestic
Violence
Over the past few
years we have made a lot of progress on domestic
violence issues with much time and effort being
invested into awareness and education. That is
very encouraging, however, one major road block
remains, it is probably the largest factor in
domestic violence continuing. Society
in general still tolerates domestic violence,
too many people still view it as socially
acceptable............

Men's Network Against
Domestic Violence
A challenge to ending
domestic violence is the silence and inaction
of the majority of non-violent people. Many believe
what happens in someone's home is a private
matter. Unfortunately, this belief advantages the
abuser and isolates the victim. Without a
strong and vocal social response, abusers
will continue to commit violence unchallenged.

Assessing Whether
Batterers Will Kill
Some batterers are
life-endangering. While it is true that all
batterers are dangerous, some are more likely to kill
than others and some are more likely to kill at
specific times. Regardless of whether there is a
protection from abuse order in effect, officers
should evaluate whether an assailant is likely
to kill his partner or other family members and/or police
personnel and take appropriate
action..............

Understanding the
Victims of Spousal Abuse
As I write about spousal
victimization I realize three very different
audiences will read these words. First are those
who are victims; second are those who were victims;
third are those concerned enough to care and to
learn and to help, but never victimized themselves.
Since the word, victim, carries connotations and
associations that some find degrading, I use it
with misgivings.
